How to start a car dismantling business in the UK

Reviewed 27 September 2026 · Prime Spares

A dismantling business can earn revenue from reusable parts and recoverable materials. Demand, selling time and profit vary considerably; buying a vehicle does not guarantee a return.

Build a costed operating plan

Account for vehicle purchase and collection, premises, equipment, authorised treatment, labour, testing, identification, photographs, storage, selling fees, packing, transport, returns and unsold stock. Keep estimated stock value separate from completed sales and cash received.

Confirm environmental authorisation

In Scotland, storing or treating waste motor vehicles requires SEPA authorisation. Most sites need a permit. Registration routes cover temporary storage of up to 10 vehicles or storage and treatment of up to 5, subject to standard conditions. If those conditions cannot be met, a permit is required. Check SEPA’s current guidance before starting.

Elsewhere in the UK, consult the Environment Agency in England, Natural Resources Wales in Wales or the Northern Ireland Environment Agency. Confirm the appropriate site permissions, treatment conditions and vehicle-record procedures before acquiring or treating waste vehicles.

Plan safe treatment and storage

Design your operation around its authorisation conditions, trained staff and appropriate equipment. Depollution, hazardous components, fluids, batteries and transport need suitable procedures. A general business guide cannot substitute for technical training or site-specific requirements.

Vehicle destruction records

A permitted ATF uses DVLA’s CoD/NoD service to report qualifying destruction or depollution. A Certificate of Destruction closes the relevant vehicle record; vehicles outside that process may require a Notification of Destruction. A physical CoD can go to the keeper or the person presenting the vehicle. Check the DVLA service guidance for the correct route.

Follow every part and cost

Keep the donor vehicle, condition, photographs, part number, location and sales records connected. Use relevant comparable asking prices as context, not as evidence of completed sales. Profitability depends on realised sales, recovery time and all associated costs.

Business support

Prime Yard provides supported software workflows. The standalone Business Partner Program can provide agreed operational services and experience-based guidance, with an initial budget discussed. Neither service guarantees sales, profit, funding, loss cover or stock buyback. Read the Business Partner Program scope.

Discuss your operating requirements

Prime Yard includes two free software months from the agreed go-live date; extensions must be agreed in writing. Training and equipment are separate. Optional equipment rental is £99 + VAT/month from day one, or you can buy equipment or use confirmed compatible equipment of your own. No minimum commitment; 30 days’ cancellation notice applies. Applicable charges remain payable.
